IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Perceived and actual likelihood of being a victim of crime: by crime type
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph illustrates the comparision between the perceived danger and actual likelihood of being victim of crime in the fiscal year 2009/10 and 2010/11 measured in percentage.
Overall, the danger felt by people over two year was far more than actually became victim of different types of crimes.
Around 15% of people perceived Burglary crime in 2009/10 and approximately 13% in 2010/11. In contrast, the exact victim of the crime was nearly 2 to 3% in those years respectively. Similarly, the rate of danger perceived for violent crime was exactly same as of Burglary. The actual victim was around 3% for both fiscal year.
Finally, the car crime has the highest record among all other crimes. in 2009/10, the perceived threat accounted for 21% where actual threat conversion was about five fold less i.e 4%. Meanwhile, the percentage decreased in threat perceived by 4% in 2010/11 however, the conversion rate remains same at 4%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: perceived risk is much higher than actual victimisation, and car crime has the highest perceived figures. The comparisons for burglary and car crime are mostly supported by the chart, including the fall in perceived car-crime risk from 21% to 17% and the broadly stable actual rate. However, some details are unclear or imprecise: violent-crime perception was similar to burglary, but not exactly the same in 2010/11, and actual rates rose slightly rather than remaining unchanged. The overview is relevant but brief, and the response is 146 words, below the 150-word minimum; eight words copied from the prompt were not counted. Add a fuller overview and report the key changes more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a brief overview, and paragraphs comparing burglary and violent crime before car crime. Sequencing words such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” “Similarly,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the comparisons. However, the progression is somewhat mechanical, and the final paragraph combines several points without clearly distinguishing the two years. Some references are also difficult to interpret, particularly “the conversion rate,” which does not clearly identify actual victimisation. Improve cohesion by grouping the two years consistently for each crime type and using precise references such as “the actual rate” or “the perceived figure.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “perceived,” “actual,” “percentage,” and “accounted for,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the exact victim of the crime,” “actual threat conversion,” and “five fold less.” “Danger felt by people” is also less precise than language describing perceived likelihood or risk. There are spelling and form issues, including “comparision,” and inconsistent capitalisation in “in 2009/10.” Aim for standard chart-description collocations and use the same precise terms throughout; this would make your comparisons clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including contrast structures such as “In contrast” and “however,” and most of the intended meaning can be followed. Some grammatical errors remain, though they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “over two year” needs a plural form, while “became victim” is missing an article. In “the rate of danger perceived for violent crime was exactly same,” the article before “same” is missing, and “the percentage decreased in threat perceived” has an awkward sentence structure. There are also punctuation and capitalisation slips after full stops. Review articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, then check that each comparison has a clear subject and verb.
