IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The first graph illustrates how much a selected nation made selling five different kinds of product in two given years, and the latter compares the differences between the values of these exports.

Looking at these tables, we can observe that all of the exports, except gems and jewellery, saw an increased value in one year. Additionally, textiles had the biggest jump by the end, while agricultural products were producing at a very stable rate in both years.

Petroleum products and engineered goods, being the most involved products in the nation's international trading for two consecutive years, each had a decent increase in revenue from 2015 to 2016, at 3 percent and 8.5 percent in changes respectively. Similarly, agricultural products and textiles saw positive changes by 2016, each growing by 0.81 percent and 15.24 percent.

Gems and jewellery, on the other hand, was in a downwards trend. Beginning at a total earnings above 40 billion dollars in 2015, their sales dropped by 5.18 percent to less than 40 billion dollars by 2016.

Another noticeable thing among the exports with increased revenue is the rate at which their earnings improved. While petroleum products and engineered goods had a normal growth, textiles had a explosion of sales by 2016, doubling the second place engineered goods' rate. Agricultural goods, by contrast, has barely a one percent increase.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You included relevant comparisons, such as noting the contrast between the growth in textiles and the decline in gems and jewellery. However, the report could be improved by including more specific data points from the table to support your descriptions. For instance, while you mention the percentage changes, you could more explicitly link these to the actual export values to provide a more comprehensive summary. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Similarly', and 'on the other hand' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of exports. The progression of ideas is clear, although some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'downwards trend', 'international trading', and 'positive changes' are used effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'producing at a very stable rate' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'a explosion' (should be 'an explosion'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations related to data analysis.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Petroleum products and engineered goods, being the most involved products...'. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'agricultural products were producing' (should be passive: 'were produced') and 'has barely a one percent increase' (subject-verb agreement), the meaning remains clear throughout. Your control of punctuation is generally good. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and refining the use of passive voice when describing data.
