Student answer (Band 6.5)

A bar chart provides detailed data about a county earned money from exported goods. The study compares 2015 and 2016 exports of petroleum products, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and engineered goods.

Overall, it is clear that form 2015 to 2016 earned money from exports increased among all the categories with the exception of one.

In fact, the exporting of gems and jewellery led to fewer earning in 2016 than in 2015 going from about 43.5 to about 40.5 billions. Which could be represented by a decrease of 5.18 per cents. On the other hand, with some more that the others, the remaining four categories had better earnings in 2016. For instance, in 2016 textile revenues soared. This category displayed the largest change with a growth of over 15.24 percentages points. Gems and jewellery, petroleum products, and engineered also displayed a smilar development in revenues. Increasing respectively by 3, 8.5 and 5.18 per cent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the overall trend and specific comparisons. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, you mention a 5.18% decrease for gems and jewellery, but the text later attributes this same figure to engineered goods, creating confusion. Additionally, the overview is somewhat vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that the data points cited are precise and clearly linked to the correct categories. The summary of the trends is present, but the lack of clarity in the data reporting prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In fact', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and minor errors in referencing, such as the sentence starting with 'Which could be represented...', which is a sentence fragment. Improving the transition between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'soared', 'revenues', and 'categories'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and incorrect terminology, such as 'county earned money' instead of 'country's export earnings' and 'percentages points' instead of 'percentage points'. The repetition of 'per cents' and 'per cent' also suggests a need for more variety. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, more precise and natural collocations would improve the quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'form 2015 to 2016 earned money from exports increased' (word order) and 'fewer earning' (should be 'lower earnings'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence fragment 'Which could be represented by a decrease of 5.18 per cents' is a notable error. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to limit the score to a 6.0.
