IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Exporting goods all over the world brings in huge amounts of revenue for the country. The more the goods exported the more the revenue which can be beneficial in many ways.

A country managed to export goods like petroleum products, engineering goods, Gems and jewelry, Agricultural products, and textiles. After exporting these goods they took all of the earnings and plotted a bar graph for years 2015 and 2016.

This showed that petroleum products earnings were approximately 60 billion dollars and this increases by 3 percent the following year. Similarly, engineering goods earned just below 60 billion in 2015 and increased by 8.5 percent in 2016. Adding on the textiles category also increased by 15.24 percent, reaching a total of 31 billion dollars in 2016 while agricultural products increased by a minimum of 0.81%.

The only category that plummeted was gems and jewelry with gaining sufficient earnings of 43 billion dollars in 2015 dropped by 5.18% in 2016.

In conclusion the Petroleum products and the engineering goods brought in the most revenue in both years whereas agricultural products and textiles brought in the least.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the highest and lowest earners and the general trends. However, the response includes an unnecessary introduction that discusses the general benefits of exporting, which is not required for an Academic Task 1. To improve, focus strictly on the data provided. While you mention most categories, the overview is somewhat integrated into the conclusion rather than being a distinct summary of the main trends. Ensure that all figures are accurately represented; for instance, you describe the agricultural increase as a 'minimum of 0.81%', which is slightly confusing phrasing. Overall, you have addressed the prompt, but the focus should remain more tightly on the data analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Adding on', and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Adding on the textiles category'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the introductory paragraph and the data analysis could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that contributes to the overall summary of the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'revenue', 'plummeted', and 'category'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'gaining sufficient earnings' is not the most natural way to describe the data, and 'a minimum of 0.81%' is slightly imprecise. You rely on some repetitive phrasing when describing the increases. To improve, try to incorporate more precise reporting verbs and adjectives to describe the trends, such as 'witnessed a marginal increase' or 'experienced a significant decline'. This will help you achieve a more professional and academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the more the goods exported the more the revenue' (which lacks proper structure) and 'this increases by 3 percent' (tense inconsistency, as the data is in the past). Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'After exporting these goods they took all of the earnings and plotted a bar graph'. While these errors do not impede communication, they do occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on maintaining consistent verb tenses when describing past data and refining your sentence construction for better flow.
