IELTS Writing Task 1 question
below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart describes the export earnings of a specific country across numerous sectors varied in 2 years, namely 2015 and 2016 while the table presents how the proportion change in each category of exports in the year 2016 compared with 2015.
Overall, it is apparent that there was a consistent upward trend in the export expenditures, excluding the gems and jewelry sector. Also, the proportion that held the highest change was textiles.
In 2015, the majority of export earnings were primarily driven from petroleum and engineering goods at around $60 billion for each, after a year, they experienced a minor climb to 62 billion. Similarly, changes in other categories were relatively moderate, under 5 billion for textiles and agriculture products while the figure for gems and jewelry witnessed a mild reduction from 43 to 41 billion by the end of the period examined.
As for the vary in values, almost all categories increased in their proportion, except gems and jewelry. Textiles were the leading category at 15,24%, followed by engineered goods at 8.5%, and petroleum products with only 1%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the data, including the overall trend and the specific percentage changes. You successfully identified the upward trend in most sectors and the decline in gems and jewelry. However, the report lacks precision in data reporting. For instance, you mention 'around $60 billion' for petroleum and engineering goods, but the provided data (if visible) would likely show distinct figures. Additionally, the final paragraph mentions '15,24%', which is an awkward way to express a percentage. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed and that comparisons are more clearly linked to the specific figures provided in the table.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2015', and 'As for' helps guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'As for the vary in values'. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the trends in the bar chart with the percentages in the table more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main points, using terms like 'upward trend', 'export earnings', and 'proportion'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'export expenditures' is likely incorrect in this context as the task refers to 'export earnings' or 'value of exports'. The phrase 'As for the vary in values' is grammatically incorrect; 'variation' would be the appropriate noun. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to data analysis and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'the proportion change' should be 'the percentage change', and 'driven from' should be 'driven by'. There are also issues with punctuation and number formatting, such as '15,24%'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your score in this criterion.
