IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar chart illustrates the export earnings of a particular country in five different categories in 2015 and 2016, while the table shows the percentage change in each export category in 2016 compared with 2015.

Overall, it is clear that export earnings increased in all sectors except gems and jewellery. In addition, textiles experienced the highest percentage growth among all categories

In 2015, the highest export earnings came from petroleum products and engineered goods, at around $60 billion and $58 billion, respectively. By 2016, both figures had increased slightly to approximately $62 billion. Likewise, the export values of textiles and agricultural products also rose, although the increases were relatively small. In contrast, gems and jewellery was the only category to decline, falling from about $43 billion to $41 billion.

Regarding the percentage changes, textiles recorded the largest increase at 15.24%, followed by engineered goods with 8.5%. Petroleum products experienced a modest rise of around 3%, while agricultural products showed only a slight increase. On the other hand, gems and jewellery was the only sector that experienced a decrease.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and successfully integrated data from both the bar chart and the table. The selection of key features, such as the growth in textiles and the decline in gems and jewellery, is accurate and well-supported by the figures provided. The comparison between the two years is consistent throughout the report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with maximum precision; for instance, you mentioned 'around $62 billion' for both petroleum and engineered goods, whereas the graph shows slight variations that could be highlighted to demonstrate a more thorough analysis of the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from general trends to specific data points. You have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Likewise', 'In contrast', and 'Regarding', which help to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the different export categories is clearly established, making the information easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Terms such as 'illustrates', 'export earnings', 'sectors', 'modest rise', and 'decline' are used appropriately in the context of a data report. The vocabulary is precise enough to describe the trends without repetition. While the range is adequate, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' (e.g., 'surged', 'experienced a marginal dip', 'remained relatively stable') would further enhance the lexical quality and demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'By 2016, both figures had increased slightly to approximately $62 billion' and 'textiles recorded the largest increase at 15.24%, followed by engineered goods with 8.5%'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free. To improve, you could experiment with more varied sentence beginnings or more complex subordinate clauses to showcase a wider range of grammatical flexibility.
