Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the value of different categories ( petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products, and textiles) exported by a particular country in 2015 and 2016. The table demonstrates the change in every category's proportion of exports , comparing 2016 with 2015. From an overall perspective, it is clear that the value of agricultural products increased by the slightest percentage among other categories.

Earnings from petroleum products accounted for 60 billion dollars in 2015, which rose slightly by 3 per cent by 2016. Engineered goods increased by a significant percentage in 2016, reaching an earning of nearly 70 billion dollars. Gems and jewellery is is the only category in the chart that represented slight decrease in its value, with a drop of 5.18% after being just above 50 billion dollars in 2015.

The value of agricultural products did not rise much from reaching approximately 40 billion dollars in 2015, except a slight increase in its value accounted for 0.81%. Export earnings of textiles grew dramatically by a percentage of 15.24%, reaching above 40 billion dollars after being just above 30 billion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and providing relevant comparisons. You successfully integrated data from both the bar chart and the table. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention the agricultural products, a more comprehensive overview would highlight the general trends across all categories, such as the fact that most categories saw growth while only one declined. Additionally, some data points could be more precise; for instance, stating 'nearly 70 billion' is acceptable, but ensuring all figures are clearly linked to the correct year would improve the clarity of your report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'From an overall perspective' and 'after being', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of data could be more fluid. Improving the variety of linking words would help the progression of ideas feel more natural and less like a list of facts.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'proportion', and 'dramatically'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'represented slight decrease' (should be 'represented a slight decrease') and 'accounted for 0.81%' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While you successfully use topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing trends and data changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the double 'is is' in the second paragraph and minor punctuation issues. While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable. Your control over complex structures is developing, but there is room for more variety. Focusing on consistent subject-verb agreement and ensuring articles are used correctly before nouns will help improve the overall accuracy of your writing.
