Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the data, but the analysis is often inaccurate and confusing. For example, the description of petroleum products as 'slightly decrease' in 2015 and 2016 contradicts the provided data. Furthermore, the summary of the table data is disjointed and contains significant errors in interpreting the percentage changes (e.g., stating textiles changed by 15.24% when the data shows a different trend). The overview is weak, as it fails to clearly highlight the most significant trends or differences between the categories. To improve, focus on accurately transcribing the figures and identifying clear, overarching trends rather than listing individual data points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing. While some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'Additionally' are used, they are often placed at the start of sentences that do not logically follow the previous point. The progression of ideas is mechanical, and the connection between the bar chart data and the table data is not well-integrated. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two years and the different categories.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic descriptors like 'highest' and 'lowest'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the most least' and 'proportion change'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe trends, opting for phrases like 'is equally in both years' instead of 'remained stable'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the presence of errors in basic terminology prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding the range of trend-related vocabulary is essential.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The table demonstrate') and article usage. Sentence structures are predominantly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'the petroleum products in 2015 is slightly decrease'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of currency symbols and percentages. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects, as these errors are pervasive throughout the text.
