Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart illustrates the value of a country's exports in five categories in 2015 and 2016, while the table shows the percentage change in export values between the two years.

Overall, petroleum products and engineered goods were the two largest export categories in both years. Most categories experienced an increase in export value, with textiles recording the largest growth. In contrast, gems and jewellery was the only category to decline.

Petroleum products generated approximately $61 billion in 2015 and rose to around $63 billion in 2016, representing a 3% increase. Similarly, the value of engineered goods increased from about $58 billion to $62 billion, an 8.5% rise. Gems and jewellery, however, fell from approximately $43 billion to $41 billion, which represented a decrease of 5.18%.

The remaining categories had considerably lower export values. Agricultural products were worth around $31 billion in both years and experienced only a marginal increase of 0.81%. Textiles had the lowest value in 2015, at approximately $26 billion, but increased to around $30 billion in 2016. This represented the largest percentage increase among all five categories, at 15.24%.

Key features are selected and supported with accurate data from the table and chart. The comparison between the two years is well-integrated, and the inclusion of percentage changes adds necessary depth. The information is logically grouped, and the summary accurately reflects the provided data without any significant omissions. This is a comprehensive and well-structured response that meets all requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'The remaining categories' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data. The transition between the general trends and the specific figures is smooth, and each paragraph has a clear focus. The information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, and the use of referencing is precise throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Phrases like 'experienced an increase', 'generated approximately', and 'marginal increase' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise and fits the context of describing statistical data well. While the range is sufficient and allows for flexibility, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to economic trends could elevate the score further. However, the current usage is natural and error-free, effectively conveying the information without any ambiguity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical control. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the opening sentence which combines two clauses effectively. Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors in tense or subject-verb agreement. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the flow is natural. The use of comparative structures is handled well, and the overall clarity of the writing is excellent. There are no persistent errors that impede communication, and the control over complex structures is consistent.
