Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by identifying the categories and the percentage changes. However, the overview is missing, which is a critical requirement for Task 1. The description of the data is repetitive and lacks a clear analytical approach. For instance, the student lists each category individually without grouping them or highlighting the most significant trends, such as the substantial growth in textiles versus the decline in gems and jewellery. The data interpretation is also somewhat confusing, as the student conflates the absolute values with the percentage changes. To improve, you must provide a clear summary of the main trends and avoid simply listing figures for every category.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response lacks a clear structure. There is no introduction or overview, and the body paragraph is a single, dense block of text that makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'the other year' and 'first year'. The transition between sentences is mechanical, and the lack of paragraphing hinders the logical flow of the report. To achieve a higher band, you should use an introduction, a clear overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs to group related information, using a variety of linking words to connect your points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'earn', 'increase', and 'percentage' are used repeatedly throughout the text. There are also spelling errors, such as 'jwellery' and 'textliles'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision; for example, instead of saying 'earn little increase', you should use more precise terminology like 'experienced a marginal rise' or 'showed a slight growth'. To improve, you should focus on learning synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and practice using collocations appropriate for describing statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the one country's exports earning in various categories' and 'the value of petroleum products increase only 3%'. There is a lack of control over subject-verb agreement and article usage. The attempt to use complex structures is minimal, and the punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with the spacing after periods. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and practicing the correct use of articles and prepositions in a formal context.
