Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear or accurate summary of the data. While it identifies the categories, the description of the trends is confusing and often contradictory. For example, stating that petroleum products 'slightly increased' while also claiming they are the 'highly export earning' lacks precision. The response fails to effectively report the percentage changes mentioned in the prompt, which is a key requirement. The information is presented in a fragmented way, making it difficult to identify the main features or make meaningful comparisons between the two years. To improve, focus on clearly stating the starting values and the specific percentage changes for each category.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the internal structure is weak. The progression of ideas is often illogical, and the use of cohesive devices is repetitive and sometimes misused, such as the frequent use of 'highly' and 'in the year of'. The referencing is unclear, particularly when discussing the trends between 2015 and 2016. The sentences are often run-on or lack proper punctuation, which disrupts the flow of information. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'conversely', 'in contrast', 'subsequently') and ensure each paragraph has a clear, singular focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. Words like 'highly', 'product', and 'category' are used excessively, which restricts the range of expression. There are significant issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the most highly product' instead of 'the highest-earning product' and 'engine goods' which is likely an inaccurate description of the data. The lack of variety prevents the student from describing the data with any degree of precision or sophistication. To improve, learn specific vocabulary for describing trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'surged', or 'experienced a decline'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('The bar graph show'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence construction. Many sentences are grammatically incomplete or lack the necessary articles and auxiliary verbs. There is no evidence of complex sentence structures; the writing relies on simple, often disjointed clauses. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structure, including the correct use of tenses for reporting data (past tense for 2015/2016) and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb.
