Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart and table presents the value of a country's exports in different categories between 2015 and 2016, while the table illustrates the proportion of change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Overall, it can be seen that the value of export earnings in petroleum products were the highest in both years, whereas textiles was the lowest. Regarding the table, the percentage change in values, textiles recorded the highest.

The export earnings of petroleum in 2015 stood at about 60$ bi ions, before increasing slightly to 65$bi ions. Meanwhile, engineered goods recorded approximately 60$ bi ions in 2015 and rose gradually to about 62$ bi ions in 2016, while textiles accounted for around 34$ bi ions in 2015, before reaching 41$ bi ions in 2016, making it the lowest in that category.

Turning to the table, the percentage change in values of textiles increased by 15.24% which was the highest in both years, whereas, agricultural products increased by 0.81%. In contrast, gems and jewellery decreased by 5.18% in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, including the highest and lowest values and the percentage changes. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the text states petroleum was the highest in both years, but the table shows 'Engineered goods' were higher in 2015. Additionally, the phrasing '60$ bi ions' is unclear and suggests a lack of precision in data transcription. While the overview is present, it lacks a clear synthesis of the trends, and the reporting of figures is inconsistent. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are transcribed accurately and that comparisons are logically sound.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'Turning to', and 'In contrast' are used to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally mechanical. The referencing is sometimes slightly confusing, particularly when discussing the table and chart simultaneously. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general trends from the specific data points. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow, though the flow between sentences could be more natural to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'export earnings', 'proportion of change', and 'recorded'. However, there are significant issues with the representation of units, such as '60$ bi ions', which appears to be a typo for '60 billion dollars'. This error affects the clarity of the report. There is some repetition of basic verbs like 'recorded' and 'increased'. To improve, you should aim for more varied vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'surged', or 'remained stable', and ensure that numerical data is presented in a standard, professional format.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the value... were the highest') and punctuation/formatting errors ('60$ bi ions'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. The use of complex structures is attempted, but the accuracy is inconsistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for typographical errors, especially when dealing with numerical data and currency symbols, which are essential for a clear report.
