IELTS Writing Task 1 question
below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graphs illustrates the proportion change in each product category--petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textiles--of exports between 2015 and 2016.
Overall, petroleum products and engineered goods had the highest number of exports throughout the one-year period, followed by gems and jewellery. Meanwhile, agricultural and textiles had the lowest figures.
In 2015, the data clearly show that the most number of export were petroleum and engineered goods accumulated for 70 billion and 65 billion respectively. In contrast, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textiles exports had 10 billion difference in number.
In 2016, it can be seen from the information given that all the figures increased gradually except for gems and jewelly. Petroleum products rose by 3%, engineer goods climbed by 8.5%, as well as agricultural products at 0.81% and textiles at 15.24%. In contrast, agriculture products experienced a decline at 0.81%. This concludes that, most products exports grew substantially.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a clear overview and identifies main features, such as the dominance of petroleum and engineered goods. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state that agricultural products rose by 0.81% and then immediately claim they experienced a decline of 0.81%, which is contradictory and confusing. Additionally, the description of the 2015 figures lacks precision, and the claim that 'all figures increased' is factually incorrect based on the provided data. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are transcribed accurately and that comparisons are logically consistent. The overview is present, but the lack of precision in reporting the data points limits the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'Overall' are used to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by the factual inconsistencies mentioned in the task achievement section. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the 2015 and 2016 data could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task, and the structure helps the reader follow the intended argument, even if the content itself contains errors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion change', 'accumulated', and 'substantially'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'jewelly' instead of 'jewellery', and minor word choice issues, such as 'most number of export' instead of 'highest volume of exports'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on collocations related to data description, such as 'experienced a marginal increase' or 'witnessed a significant decline'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The bar graphs illustrates' (subject-verb agreement) and 'most number of export were' (incorrect phrasing). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. You have attempted to use complex structures, but they are often marred by minor inaccuracies. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of plural/singular forms when discussing data categories.
