Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart compares the value of a country's exports in five categories in 2015 and 2016, while the table shows the percentage change in export earnings in 2016 compared with 2015.
Overall, petroleum products and engineered goods were the highest export earners in both years. Most categories experienced an increase in export value in 2016, while gems and jewellery were the only category that showed a decline.
Petroleum products earned $61 billion in 2015 and increased to approximately $63 billion in 2016, representing a rise of 3%. Similarly, the value of engineered goods grew from around $58 billion to $62 billion, which was an increase of 8.5 %. Agricultural products also saw a small growth, rising from about $31 billion just over 431 billion, an increase of 0.81%.
In contrast, gems and jewellery exports decreased slightly from approximately $43 billion in 2015 to around $41 billion in 2016. This category recorded a fall of 5.18%. Textiles showed the most significant growth among all categories, increasing from roughly $25 billion to about $30 billion. According to the table, textile exports rose by 15.24%, making in the fastest growing export sector during the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the highest export earners and the contrasting trends between categories. The data is accurately reported, and the comparisons between 2015 and 2016 are clear. You have provided a good overview in the second paragraph, which helps the reader grasp the general trends immediately. The inclusion of specific figures from both the bar chart and the table demonstrates a strong ability to synthesize information from multiple sources. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed perfectly, as there is a minor typo in the agricultural products figure (431 billion instead of 31 billion).
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'In contrast', and 'According to the table' to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows well from one point to the next. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the data trends without any confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'highest export earners', 'experienced an increase', and 'fastest growing export sector' are used appropriately. There is an awareness of style and collocation, which allows for a natural flow of information. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or varied ways to describe trends (e.g., 'surged', 'dipped', 'remained stable') could elevate the lexical range further. The spelling is generally accurate, with no errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while the table shows...', 'making it the fastest growing...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is strong. There is a minor slip in the final sentence ('making in the fastest' should be 'making it the fastest'), but this is a rare error that does not affect the overall clarity of the message. Your ability to handle numerical data within complex sentence structures is commendable.
