Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given chart depicts the earnings from export of five different categories in a particular nation between 2015 and 2016.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the maximum number of petroleum products were export during the year. However, people earned least amount of money from the export of textiles.

To commence with, in 2015, individuals collected around 65 billion dollar through export of petroleum products, which rose about 3% in next year. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the data, including the values for 2015 and 2016 and the percentage changes. The overview is clear and identifies the main trends. However, the report is slightly let down by some inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, stating that petroleum products were the 'maximum number' is imprecise; it should refer to the 'highest value' or 'highest earnings'. Additionally, the description of the percentage changes is sometimes confusing, such as 'experienced decline to 5.18%', which is grammatically awkward and mathematically unclear. Overall, the main features are highlighted, but more precision in reporting the data would improve the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Following this', and 'Furthermore' helps to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as 'stuck at 65 billion dollars'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between the percentage changes and the final values could be smoother to enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'earnings', 'export', 'categories', and 'generated' used correctly. However, there are some instances of unnatural word choice or collocation. For example, 'selling ratio' is not the appropriate term for percentage change, and 'in the abroad' is grammatically incorrect. The phrase 'maximum number of petroleum products' is also imprecise, as it refers to monetary value rather than quantity. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'were export' instead of 'were exported', 'people earned least amount' missing the article 'the', and 'hit to 45 billion' which is an incorrect prepositional usage. Additionally, 'between the year of 2015 and 2016' is slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would significantly enhance the grammatical accuracy of the writing.
