Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar chart illustrates values of the country's exports in product category likewise petroleum products, engineering goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textiles. The table shows range of percentage that varies in each of the products in 2016 comparing with earlier year.

Overall, petroleum products earned the most money in both years, while textiles had the biggest percentage increase. Gems and jewellery was the only category that made less money in 2016 than in 2015.

Petroleum products earned the most money out of all five categories, going up from about $65 billion in 2015 to $68 billion in 2016, an increase of 3%. Engineering goods was the second highest earner, rising from around $58 billion to $65 billion, which was an 8.5% increase — the second biggest jump of all categories. Gems and jewellery earned around $53 billion in 2015, but this went down to $51 billion in 2016, a fall of 5.18%. This was the only category to decrease. Agricultural products stayed almost the same, changing very little, by just 0.81%. Textiles earned the least money of all the categories, but it had the largest percentage increase, going up by 15.24% from 2015 to 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of petroleum products and the contrasting performance of textiles and gems/jewellery. The data is accurately reported, and the comparisons between 2015 and 2016 are clear. You have included all five categories and provided the necessary percentage changes to support your summary. The overview is concise and highlights the most significant trends, which is essential for a high band score. To improve further, ensure that the data points are integrated more fluidly into the narrative rather than listing them sequentially.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from general trends to specific data points. You use cohesive devices such as 'while', 'but', and 'going up from... to...' effectively to link information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the supporting details. The structure is clear and easy to follow, which demonstrates a good command of organizational features. To reach a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of linking phrases to connect the sentences within the body paragraph more dynamically.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'earned the most money', 'largest percentage increase', and 'stayed almost the same' are accurate and appropriate for the task. However, the range is somewhat limited; you rely on basic verbs like 'earned' and 'going up' repeatedly. To achieve a higher band, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'witnessed a decline', or 'experienced a marginal change'. The current vocabulary is functional and error-free, but lacks the sophistication required for the highest bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally sound. There are minor issues with article usage and phrasing in the introduction, such as 'illustrates values of the country's exports' (should be 'the values') and 'likewise petroleum products' (which is an awkward choice of connector). Despite these minor slips, the grammar does not impede communication. You have used a variety of structures to report the data, which shows a good level of grammatical competence.
