Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph shows one country's export value in five categories in 2015 and 2016 measured in billion dollars. Table shows the percentage change in each category from 2015 to 2016.
Overall, exports in each category was increased in 2016 in comparison to 2015, except gems and jewelry which dropped as compared to previous year. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and trends. You successfully highlighted the growth in most categories and the decline in gems and jewelry. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies; for instance, you state that 'exports in each category was increased' and then immediately mention a drop in gems and jewelry, which is contradictory. Additionally, the data interpretation is occasionally imprecise, such as claiming petroleum products grew by 3% when the table might indicate otherwise. To reach a higher band, ensure that your summary of the data is factually consistent and that you clearly distinguish between the absolute values and the percentage changes provided in the table.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally clear, and you use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'Although'. However, the use of referencing is occasionally weak, and some transitions feel mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly. The overall structure is coherent, but the relationships between the sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'substantial', 'notably', and 'significant'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'major change was observed in textile sector with a significant raise' is slightly unnatural; 'rise' would be the correct noun form, and 'increase' is often more precise than 'raise' in this context. You also use 'contributions were done by', which is awkward phrasing. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that you use the correct parts of speech (e.g., 'rise' as a noun versus 'raise' as a verb).
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('exports in each category was increased') and missing articles ('in textile sector'). Additionally, 'agricultural products stood approximately same' is missing a preposition or adverbial structure. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammar rules, particularly article usage and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
