Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and comparing the data from 2015 and 2016. You successfully highlighted the growth in textiles and the decline in gems and jewellery. However, the overview is slightly confusing; you mention 'four out of the five categories' were highest, which is not clearly supported by the data provided. Additionally, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting, such as stating petroleum products rose by 3% when the table shows a different figure. To improve, ensure your overview clearly synthesises the most significant trends rather than listing details, and double-check your data transcription to ensure accuracy.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'At a fleeting glance', and 'Moving further' to transition between ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural in an academic context. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be strengthened to ensure a smoother progression of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main points, using terms like 'significant growth', 'dominant', and 'marginal rise'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'illustrates about', 'the rended table', and 'failing from' (instead of 'falling from'). Some phrasing is also non-standard, such as 'data had been measure in percentage'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word forms are correct. Proofreading for these small errors will significantly improve the clarity of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('gems and jewellery observe gradually decline'), incorrect verb tenses ('data had been measure'), and punctuation errors (missing spaces after periods). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not completely impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring consistent verb tense usage throughout the report.
