Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given bar graph illustrates about the value of exports of one country's during 2015 and 2016 in various categories. The data had been measured in percentage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data, but it fails to accurately interpret the provided information. The student confuses the 'value' of exports with the 'percentage change' mentioned in the prompt. Furthermore, the descriptions of the data are vague and often contradictory (e.g., stating exports were 'declining' while the data shows growth). Key features are not clearly highlighted, and the comparison between 2015 and 2016 is poorly executed, leading to a lack of clarity regarding the actual trends. To improve, focus on accurately reading the axes and labels of the chart and ensuring that the data points cited align with the visual evidence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inappropriate, such as 'At a fleeting glance' and 'Moving further,' which do not always fit the context of a data report. The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed because the analysis of the data is inconsistent. While there is an attempt at an overview, it is not well-supported by the subsequent body paragraphs. Improving the logical flow between sentences and using more precise linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'every head than gems and jewelry' and 'some deliberate percentage.' The student relies on basic descriptors and struggles to use academic terminology appropriate for describing statistical data. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' 'experienced a significant increase,' or 'accounted for.' Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' will also help improve the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'The data had been measured'), missing articles, and awkward sentence structures (e.g., 'which it was ranging between'). While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, they are often inaccurate or poorly constructed. Punctuation is generally functional, but the lack of control over basic grammar rules, such as subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, is evident throughout the text. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors would be beneficial.
