IELTS Writing Task 1 question
below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided bar charts compare a country's exports in different categories between 2015 and 2016. To summarize, every product saw a rise in its exports in comparison to the previous year. However, the textile grew considerably over a period of one year, but the gems and jewellery experienced a slight decline in their exports in 2016.
The fuel products and the engineering items witnessed 3 percent and 8.5 percent growth, and their exports were at 60 and approximately 55 billion dollars in 2015 respectively, and both reached around 62 billion dollars in 2016. Furthermore, the agricultural products saw a marginal increase of just 0.81 percent and surged to just over 40 billion dollars in 2016. While the textiles underwent an exponential increase of 15.24% and attained the 40 billion dollars mark in 2016. On the other hand, the gems and jewellery's export dipped from 50 billion dollars in 2015 to around 45 billion dollars in 2016. The overall percentage drop was 5.18 percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. However, there is a significant factual inaccuracy in your summary: you state that 'every product saw a rise in its exports,' which contradicts the data provided for gems and jewellery, which experienced a decline. Furthermore, your description of the fuel and engineering items is slightly confusing; you mention they reached 'around 62 billion dollars' without clearly distinguishing between the two categories. To improve, ensure that your overview accurately reflects the trends shown in the data and that you clearly separate the performance of different categories to avoid ambiguity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into two paragraphs: an introduction with an overview, and a body paragraph detailing the specific figures. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'While,' and 'On the other hand' to link ideas. However, the transition between the overview and the specific data is a bit abrupt. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the internal flow within the second paragraph could be improved by grouping the categories that increased separately from those that decreased, rather than mixing them. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear enough to follow without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'marginal increase,' 'surged,' and 'exponential increase.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, describing a 15.24% increase as 'exponential' is likely an exaggeration in this context. Additionally, the phrasing 'the textile grew' is slightly unnatural; 'textile exports grew' would be more precise. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding hyperbolic language when describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'While...' clause in the second paragraph. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the textile grew' (should be plural or include 'exports') and 'the gems and jewellery's export dipped' (the possessive is slightly awkward here). Punctuation is generally handled well, though some sentences are slightly cluttered with data points. The errors present do not impede communication, but you should aim for greater consistency in subject-verb agreement and more varied sentence construction to demonstrate higher control.
