Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided bar charts compare a country's exports in different categories between 2015 and 2016. To summarize, every product saw a rise in its exports in comparison to the previous year. However, the textiles sector grew considerably over a period of one year, but the gems and jewellery experienced a slight decline in their exports in 2016.

The fuel products and the engineering items witnessed 3 percent and 8.5 percent growth, subsequently their exports were at 60 and approximately 55 billion dollars in 2015 respectively, and both reached around 62 billion dollars in 2016. Furthermore, the agricultural products saw a marginal increase of just 0.81 percent and surged to just over 40 billion dollars in 2016. While the textiles underwent an exponential increase of 15.24% and attained the 40 billion dollars mark in 2016. On the other hand, the gems and jewellery exports dipped from 50 billion dollars in 2015 to around 45 billion dollars in 2016. The overall percentage drop was 5.18 percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the percentage changes and the values for 2015 and 2016. However, there is a significant factual error in the overview: you state that 'every product saw a rise,' which contradicts the data provided for 'gems and jewellery,' which clearly experienced a decline. This inaccuracy impacts the overall quality of the summary. While you have selected relevant data points to support your description, the overview needs to be more accurate to reflect the actual trends shown in the table. Ensure that your summary statement is fully supported by the data provided to avoid misrepresenting the information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'furthermore,' 'while,' and 'on the other hand' to connect ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the contradictory statement in the overview slightly disrupts the logical flow of the report. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, using terms like 'marginal increase,' 'surged,' and 'exponential increase.' There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'subsequently' used incorrectly to mean 'consequently' or 'respectively.' Additionally, the phrase 'attained the 40 billion dollars mark' is acceptable but could be more precise. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for some flexibility, it does not consistently reach the level of precision required for a higher band score. Improving the accuracy of linking words and descriptive verbs will enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the gems and jewellery experienced a slight decline in their exports' (the plural 'their' is slightly awkward here) and the misuse of 'subsequently' in the second paragraph. Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should aim for a greater variety of error-free complex structures and ensure that your use of conjunctions and relative clauses is consistently accurate. Overall, your control of grammar is solid but requires more attention to detail.
