Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, stopping at only 119 words, which results in a significant penalty under Task Achievement. Content-wise, the student attempts to summarise the charts and table by identifying some main features, such as petroleum products and engineered goods having the highest values in 2015 and gems and jewellery decreasing. However, the summary lacks sufficient detail and contains inaccurate data reporting. For example, the student states that agricultural products showed no change in both years, whereas the table clearly indicates a 0.81% increase, and claims textiles were at the lowest in 2015 when the actual lowest was textiles at 26 billion compared to agricultural products at 31 billion. The overview is rudimentary and several key comparisons are omitted.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four short paragraphs, representing an attempt at structuring an introduction, an overview, and body details. However, logical progression is weak and ideas are disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the excessive and repetitive use of 'In 2015' and transitional phrases like 'moreover' and 'while' which fail to connect ideas smoothly. Referencing is also confusing; for instance, the sentence starting with 'The petroleum products and engineered goods lies in 60 to 55...' groups disparate data points together incorrectly and confuses the reader regarding which numbers belong to which category. Paragraphing is present, but the overall mechanical cohesion and lack of clear logical links pull this criterion down.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms and makes numerous spelling and word-form errors throughout the text, such as 'propotion' instead of 'proportion', 'domitent' instead of 'dominant', 'textlies' and 'textle' instead of 'textiles', and 'agriculture products' instead of 'agricultural products'. There is little successful use of less common vocabulary, and collocation is frequently unnatural, such as 'shows a minor decrease around 3%'. While the vocabulary chosen is adequate to convey a rudimentary topic, the frequency of spelling mistakes and basic word choices restrict the score to this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that frequently break down. There are several grammatical and agreement errors, such as 'The bar chart illustrate' (subject-verb agreement), 'one countrys exports' (missing apostrophe), and 'lies in 60 to 55' (incorrect preposition and awkward phrasing). Punctuation is also careless, with lowercase letters starting sentences (e.g., 'the table shows'). Although some basic sentences are clear, the high density of structural errors and lack of complex sentence control limit the effectiveness of the communication.
