IELTS Writing Task 1 question
below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration depicts the value of a country's exports in different industries (petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textiles.) from 2015 to 2016. Whereas, the given table demonstrates the variations in the percentage in every field of area of exports comparing 2016 with 2015. The amount is calculated in $billions.
Overall, it is clear that a country exported most of these goods to other countries in 2016 as compared to 2015. However, exported more of gems and jewellery in 2015 rather than in 2016.
Turning to the details, petroleum and engineered goods exports were at peak in 2016 at more than 60 billions$ whereas, in 2015 petroleum goods were around 60 billions$ however, the other one was below that range. Moreover, the exports in textile were below than 40 billions$; therefore,
the other two categories were same with a slight difference.
As a result, the percentage of petroleum products were 3% higher in 2016. Furthermore, engineered goods were 8.5% high. In addition, the percentage of agricultural and textiles products were also more in 2016 (0.81% and 15.24 percent respectively). Finally, gems and jewellery were 5.18% lower in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of both the export earnings chart and the percentage change table. Key trends, such as petroleum and engineered goods having the highest values and gems and jewellery experiencing a decline (-5.18%), are correctly identified. Comparisons are made appropriately between categories and years. However, some data points lack precision (e.g., describing agricultural and textile categories rather vaguely before introducing the table stats), and the reporting of figures could be more thoroughly integrated. Overall, the response fulfills the task requirements adequately, earning a Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introduction outlining the charts, moves to an overall summary paragraph, breaks down body details by chart elements, and finishes with the percentage data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different parts of the visual data. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as the abrupt transition 'As a result,' when introducing percentage changes, and grammatical referencing like 'the other one' and 'the other two categories were same' slightly hinders smooth readability. Cohesion is generally sufficient for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully utilizing terms such as 'illustrates', 'variations', 'percentage', and specific product categories like 'petroleum products' and 'engineered goods'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'variations in the percentage in every field of area', 'were at peak', and 'billions$'. Less common vocabulary attempts sometimes lack precision or natural style. Spelling and basic word formation are generally accurate, placing this response securely at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using 'Whereas, the given table demonstrates...' and subordinate clauses. However, punctuation and grammatical errors are noticeable. For instance, placing a full stop before a dependent clause ('...and textiles.; therefore, the other two categories...') and incorrect phrasing like 'were below than' or 'the percentage of petroleum products were' (subject-verb agreement error with singular percentage/plural noun) detract from grammatical accuracy. While communication is not impeded, these frequent minor errors keep the grammar score at Band 6.0.
