Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the visual data, identifying several key categories such as petroleum products and engineered goods. However, the interpretation of the data is frequently inaccurate and confused. For instance, the student states that petroleum products 'reached the 60 billion dollar' mark in 2015 and were above 60 billion in 2016, but misreads other trends, such as stating that gems and jewellery reached 50 billion in 2015 when the actual value was around 43 billion. Furthermore, the overview paragraph is vague and contains confused phrasing (‘While the gems and jewwllery went then the agricultural products...’). While all parts of the task are partially addressed, the inaccurate data reporting and lack of a coherent overall summary prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing syntax, such as starting paragraphs with 'To begin with' followed by unclear comparative statements. Cohesive devices are either missing, misused, or repetitive (e.g., overusing 'while' and 'and'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks clear structure, making it difficult for the reader to follow the intended comparisons between 2015 and 2016.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and frequently hindered by spelling errors and inappropriate word choices. Examples of spelling mistakes include 'jewwllery', 'jewwllwey', 'wtih', and 'tred'. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary ('made good progress', 'got more profit') and struggles with collocation and precise terminology necessary for describing statistical data. While the topic-specific vocabulary (e.g., 'petroleum products', 'engineered goods', 'percentage') is partially adequate, repeated lexical inaccuracies impede smooth reading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is low. There are frequent errors in verb tense, preposition use, and sentence construction. For example, 'one country's in an different categories', 'the petroleum products leading the graph', and 'downward in 2015 below the 60 billions dollar' demonstrate a weak control of basic sentence skeletons and verb phrases. Punctuation is basic, and many sentences lack main verbs or contain awkward modifiers that obscure meaning, placing this firmly in the Band 5 category.
