Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart and table illustrate the value of a country's exports in different categoris between 2015 and 2016, and percentage change in each category respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the export earnings in 2015 and 2016 alongside the percentage changes. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, identifying petroleum products as the highest earners and textiles as the lowest, while correctly noting the major trends. Key data points are accurately selected and compared, such as the growth in petroleum products and engineered goods, the decline in gems and jewellery, and the significant surge in textiles. The figures cited generally align with the provided visual data. While some specific numerical details are rounded or approximated, this is appropriate for Task 1, and the overall response satisfies the requirements of Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with a suitable introductory paragraph, moves into a comprehensive overview, and then details specific categories in subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', 'Similarly', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is handled well, grouping rising trends together and separating the single declining category. Although the cohesion is generally clear and appropriate, occasional minor awkwardness in transitions prevents it from reaching a higher band, placing it solidly at Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information flexibly and precisely, using terms such as 'illustrate', 'accounted for', 'experinced' (misspelled), and 'declined'. Less common lexical items and phrases related to data description are attempted, such as 'percentage change' and 'export earnings'. However, there are a few spelling and word choice inaccuracies, most notably 'categoris' instead of 'categories', 'experinced' instead of 'experienced', and 'happend' instead of 'happened'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response makes use of a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participial phrases effectively (e.g., 'going from roughly 45 billion...'). There is a good variety of structures employed to report data. However, there are a few grammatical and mechanical errors present, such as repetitive phrasing ('rising 3% in value', 'climbing 8.5%', 'an increase of 15.24%') and minor spelling issues. Despite these flaws, the majority of sentences are error-free, and the errors do not impede overall understanding, fully justifying a Band 6.5 or 7.0; a Band 6.5 is awarded here due to the recurrent punctuation and spelling slips.
