Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising the main features of the chart, mentioning petroleum products, agricultural products, textiles, and gems and jewellery. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that agricultural products had the 'lowest changes from all catagories' at 0.81%, while completely misinterpreting the absolute values or general trends in places. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat weak, focusing heavily on textiles rather than capturing the broader picture of overall growth across most categories. While the main features are touched upon, the lack of precision in handling the dataset and minor confusion between absolute export values and percentage changes keep this response within Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organised into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, a body paragraph detailing specific data points, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, though they can feel somewhat mechanical. Paragraphing is appropriately utilised to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the progression within the body paragraph is slightly disjointed, jumping back and forth between different categories without a clear logical grouping. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall logical flow suffers from repetitive phrasing and weak transitional links between sentences, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to the prompt such as 'export', 'percentage', 'category', 'increase', and 'reduction'. However, there are notable spelling errors repeated throughout the text, such as 'catagories' and 'catogory'. Additionally, word choice is sometimes imprecise or awkward, as seen in phrases like 'one reduction changes is being noticeable' and 'highly increase'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'uprising and downfalling', these are used inaccurately. Because the vocabulary errors do not entirely impede communication but are frequent enough to distract the reader, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as subordinate clauses introduced by 'which is only 0.81%' and 'which is the only decreasing exports'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including 'in the year of 2015 and 2016' (instead of 'the years 2015 and 2016'), 'export of gems and jewellery got reduced', and 'exporting different kinds of products have seen uprising and downfalling that maybe due to various reasons'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are frequent, they rarely impede the overall communication of the writer's intended meaning, supporting a Band 5.5 score.
