IELTS Writing Task 1 question
below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart and the table illustrate the rate of change of various items petrolleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products, and texiles exported from 2015 to 2016 and the rate of percentage change with respect to previous year over this two-years period respectively.
Overall, it is admittedly clear that textiles registered an upward trajectory and accounted for the highest percent increment from 2015 to 2016, whereas gems and jewellery registred for downward ascent and hit the all time high decrease in their exports.
The table and chart make it clear that all the categories saw increase in the export on contrary to the gems and jewellery which hit lowest mark of 5.18 percent decrease in their demand as compared to the previous year. Among the other categories, textiles saw the highest increase hitting the top mark of 15.24 percent increment in their demand while agricultural products saw the lowest increment with 0.81 percent

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers the main features of the visual data well, successfully reporting data from both the bar chart and the table. Key trends such as the highest increase in textiles (15.24%) and the single decrease in gems and jewellery (-5.18%) are correctly identified and contrasted. However, the response is relatively brief and lacks a deeper comparison of the starting and ending values for 2015 and 2016 across all categories. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, and the selection of data is relevant and accurate, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized into an introduction and two body paragraphs, providing a coherent overall arrangement. Logical connectors are used, such as 'Overall', 'whereas', and 'on contrary to', although some referencing and transitional phrases are a bit mechanical or awkward (e.g., 'registred for downward ascent'). Paragraphing is present, but the body of the text is somewhat compressed. Cohesive devices are generally functional, allowing the reader to follow the main comparisons easily, which fits the Band 6 criteria.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'upward trajectory', 'percent increment', and 'decrease in demand'. However, there are several spelling errors ('petrolleum', 'texiles', 'registred') and awkward collocations ('downward ascent', 'all time high decrease'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not severely impede overall communication. The lexical range is sufficient to convey the main features of the chart and table, earning a Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is attempted throughout the response. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing articles ('saw increase in the export', 'saw highest increase') and incorrect prepositions ('decrease in their demand as compared to the previous year'). Punctuation and sentence structures occasionally falter, but the meaning remains generally clear. These errors reflect a typical Band 6 profile where complex structures contain frequent errors while simple sentences remain mostly controlled.
