Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response addresses the task only partially and falls well below the word count requirement of 150 words, stopping at just 108 words. Furthermore, the report contains significant inaccuracies when describing the data from the bar chart. For instance, the student states that petroleum products earnings were "65 billons dollors" and that textiles were "almost 35 billion sell", whereas the true figures are approximately 61 and 26 billion respectively. The overview is also incomplete, as it fails to properly synthesise the main trends across the categories. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met, report data accurately without misreading the visual information, and provide a fully developed summary of the key features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, with an introductory sentence and the beginning of a body paragraph, but there is no clear overall progression or concluding overview. Cohesive devices are attempted, such as "While," at the beginning of the second sentence and "On the contrary" and "Lastly", but these are used inaccurately or mechanically. Paragraphing is also disrupted, as the response cuts off abruptly after only two paragraphs. To improve, the writer needs to logically sequence ideas, develop a clear progression from introduction to body paragraphs and overview, and use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as "demonstates", "comparision", "proportion", "categorie", "billons dollors", and "selling" used instead of sales or revenue. These errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, use less common vocabulary with greater precision, and eliminate spelling and word-choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. There are noticeable errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as "the least categorie of export was textiles were almost 35 billion sell" and missing or incorrect prepositions within grammatical patterns. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider mix of complex sentence forms with better control over grammar, plurals, and verb agreements.
