Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by reporting figures from the chart and the table, but it fails to present a clear, accurate overview of the main trends. The student misinterprets the data significantly, frequently confusing absolute export values in billions of dollars with percentages, such as stating that 'export of petroleum products... was higher about 62... percent'. Furthermore, the data points selected are often inaccurate or lack necessary context, reflecting only a partial and confusing response to the task. To reach a higher level, the writer must accurately report the figures provided in the visual data, distinguish clearly between billions of dollars and percentage changes, and include a well-defined overview highlighting the overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text shows some basic organisation with a brief introduction followed by body details, but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure. Paragraphing is weak and arbitrary, with sentences grouped awkwardly together, such as merging distinct data points into a single dense paragraph without clear logical transitions. Additionally, cohesive devices are extremely limited and repetitive, which makes the flow mechanical and difficult to follow. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to group related data into clear, distinct paragraphs—such as separating the baseline export values from the percentage changes—and use a wider range of appropriate cohesive links to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple phrases like 'export of', 'was about', and 'compared to'. There are notable lexical inaccuracies and misuse of terms, such as confusing currency values with percentages ('export of petroleum products... was higher about 62... percent'). Spelling is generally acceptable, but the overall lexical range is limited and inadequate for a precise discussion of statistical data. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate a wider variety of less common vocabulary and precise reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'revenue', 'earnings', 'fluctuate', or 'growth', while ensuring terms are used with correct collocations and accurate meanings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at comparisons that contain structural errors. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, prepositions, and number agreement, such as 'The earnings from Gems and jewellery was' (singular verb with plural-looking subject) and 'during these two uears' (typographical and spelling issues within grammatical contexts). Punctuation and spacing errors, such as missing spaces after periods, are also noticeable. To improve, the student should practice forming accurate complex sentences, maintain consistent tense control when describing past data, and work on basic subject-verb agreement and article use.
