Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to present the main features of the chart, noting the highest and lowest export growth categories, such as textiles and agricultural products, and mentioning the single category that declined, gems and jewellery. However, the task is addressed only partially because some data points and relationships are described inaccurately or unclearly. For instance, the text struggles to distinguish clearly between absolute values in billions and percentage changes, leading to confusion in how the information is reported. Ideas are limited and under-developed, lacking a cohesive overview of the entire dataset. To reach a higher level, the response should present a clearer, fully developed summary that accurately reports the main trends and contrasts across all categories without confusion between the exported values and their percentage changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response displays some organization with an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs addressing specific categories, and a concluding remark. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'Depend on the chart', 'On the onther hand', and 'additionally', which fail to create smooth transitions between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks logical sequencing. To improve, the writer needs to employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one to guide the reader clearly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'category', 'exportation', and 'percentage', but these are frequently marred by spelling and word-choice errors, including 'decoument' instead of document, 'decission' instead of decision, and 'gewellery' instead of jewellery. There are also awkward collocations and word-formation issues, such as 'exports's vary scale percentage' and 'decreasing it's percentage'. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their lexical range, eliminate basic spelling mistakes, and use vocabulary with greater precision regarding word forms and standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at complex or descriptive structures are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The chart is show', 'the lowest increase it is'), incorrect prepositions ('in exportation field'), article omissions, and erroneous verb forms ('showes increace', 'is appeared'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To progress, the student needs to develop a better command of basic sentence patterns, verb tenses, and grammatical agreements, while reducing the density of structural errors.
