Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting an overview with some main features and comparisons, but suffering from several inaccurate data points when compared against the visual data. For instance, the student reports that petroleum products exports grew to 65 billion in 2016 from 65 billion in 2015, which lacks clarity and misstates the actual starting figure of around 61 billion. Similarly, the figures stated for gems and jewellery and agricultural products deviate significantly from the provided chart. Furthermore, while the student attempts to highlight key trends such as the highest and lowest categories, the lack of accurate data reporting and under-developed details limit the overall effectiveness of the response. To reach a higher band, the student must ensure that all figures and percentages cited are carefully checked against the source material and accurately reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some organization with a basic division into paragraphs, including an introduction and an overview. However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the body paragraphs, and information is grouped rather randomly without a logical flow. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or inaccurate, with abrupt transitions between sentences and ideas, such as moving directly from petroleum products to engineered goods without clear linking. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making the relationship between data points difficult to follow. To improve, the student should structure the body paragraphs more logically—for instance, grouping growing categories together versus declining ones—and use a wider variety of appropriate cohesive markers to connect ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource used is limited and just minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and includes specific percentages, but there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word forms, such as 'illustraites' for illustrates, 'Petrolium' and 'petrolieum' for petroleum, and 'slighlty' for slightly. Additionally, collocations are basic, and vocabulary related to data trends is repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'grew up' and 'fell'. These inaccuracies and limited range occasionally cause difficulty or confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their vocabulary repertoire with accurate terminology for describing data and eliminate basic spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex structures that are often faulty or awkward. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'petroleum products has the 65b' and 'the export were around 55b'. Punctuation errors are also present, including missing spaces after full stops and comma splices. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader in parsing the intended meaning. To move up to a higher band, the student must practice using a wider variety of error-free complex sentences and pay closer attention to basic grammatical rules such as pluralization and verb tense agreement.
