Student answer (Band 5.0)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only partially and struggles with accuracy in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that 'Petroleum products earned over 6.5 billion doller', whereas the chart shows figures around 61 to 63 billion dollars. Similarly, the statement 'Textilies earned only over 30 billions in 2015 and slightly over 40 billions on 2016' is incorrect since textiles earned 26 billion and 31 billion. Furthermore, the selection of main features is disjointed, and the numbers are consistently misread by a factor of ten or confused entirely. To move up, the writer must carefully check the axis labels and accurately report the key data points rather than inventing figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation in the response, featuring a basic introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing the categories. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the transitions feel mechanical or abrupt, such as starting paragraphs with 'In the chart' and 'Engineered goods earned the most'. Referencing is also weak, with pronouns and connectors failing to link ideas smoothly. The spelling of 'Over all' as two words further detracts from the structure. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices logically and ensure each paragraph builds clearly on the previous one to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable spelling and word choice errors that cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include spelling mistakes like 'doller' instead of dollar, 'Textilies' and 'jwellery', alongside misuse of terms such as treating billions incorrectly. While the student attempts some task-specific vocabulary like 'export', 'categories', and 'percentage change', the execution is hindered by frequent lexical slips. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to use a broader range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and employ more precise phrasing when discussing statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a very limited range of structures, mostly relying on simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the value of export of the petroleum products were greater', where 'value' is singular. Preposition and article usage are also problematic, as seen in 'in the both years' and 'on 2016'. Attempts at complex structures are often faulty, and frequent errors in grammar require the reader to slow down. To improve, the writer must focus on basic sentence construction, correct verb agreement, and accurate use of prepositions of time.
