Student answer (Band 5.0)

The below table illustrate the amount of one nation supplies the different categoties from 2015 to 2016. The table show the ratio of change in every category of supplying in 2015 as contrasted with 2015.

Over all, the petroleum products raise and the gems and jewellery had decreased. Every export had boost but one of them had falled.

First of all, the petroleum product had 60$ in 2015 but raised 3% in 2016 to 70$ in export earning. Then we had engineered goods in 2015 was 60$ but boost to 3% in 2016 which is 70$ in export earning. Moreover, the gems and jewellery had 40$ in 2015 but decreased 5.18% in 2016 which is 37$ in export earning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a limited and partially inaccurate overview of the visual data. While the student attempts to summarise the main categories, the content contains significant confusion regarding the figures and trends. For instance, the text claims that petroleum products and engineered goods both reached 70$ in 2016, and misinterprets the percentage change data provided in the table. The overview is overly simplistic, stating incorrectly that 'the petroleum products raise and the gems and jewellery had decreased' while missing major trends across the full dataset. Furthermore, some key data points are inaccurate or poorly contextualised, reflecting a struggle to fully extract and report the primary features required by the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation in the response, featuring paragraph breaks that attempt to separate different product categories, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, such as the constant use of 'in 2015' and 'in 2016' combined with formulaic transition phrases like 'First of all' and 'Moreover'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical links between data points. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to ensure ideas flow smoothly and logically from one sentence to the next without relying on repetitive transitional clichés, and use referencing words more accurately to connect the data points into a cohesive narrative.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to economic data, such as 'export earning' and 'ratio of change', but these are handled with noticeable inaccuracy and awkward phrasing. There are also frequent issues with word choice and word formation, such as writing 'categoties' instead of 'categories', 'raise' instead of 'rose', and 'falled' instead of 'fell'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher score. To improve, the student should expand their range of vocabulary for describing charts and focus on correct word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, such as mixing past and present verbs in descriptions of past data ('the table illustrate', 'the petroleum product had 60$ in 2015 but raised 3%'), incorrect prepositions, and structural awkwardness like 'Then we had engineered goods in 2015 was 60$'. These frequent errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, maintain consistent past tenses when discussing historical data, and construct error-free complex sentences.
