Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the number of one's country export earnings in five distinct categories, Petroleulnm goods, En gineered goods, Gems and jewellery, Agricultural Products and Textiles during 2015 and 2016. While the table compares the precentage change in each category of export earnings in 2016 and 2015.

Overall, it is clear that petroleum products had the highest figure, while textile recorded the lowest numbers.

The export of all products expect the gems and jewellery increased slightly in 2016 as compared to 2015 while the value of gems and jewellery decline steadily in 2016 from 50 to 48 approximately 5.18%. Whereas the textiles that had the lowest value among all grow significantly in 2016.

The export of textiles increased significantly as compared to others in 2016 from 35 to 40

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially by attempting to summarise the main features of the visual data. An overview is provided, noting that petroleum products had the highest figures and textiles the lowest, but the progression and reporting of data contain inaccuracies and confusion. For instance, the student misinterprets the 2015 absolute figures as 2016 values and confuses the values for gems and jewellery and textiles, stating that gems and jewellery declined from 50 to 48 and textiles grew from 35 to 40, which do not align with the provided chart and table. Furthermore, the reporting of percentage changes is mixed with inconsistent data references. To reach a higher band, the student must accurately extract and report key features from both the chart and table without misinterpreting the underlying figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation present in the response, beginning with an introduction, an overview, and body sentences detailing specific categories. However, there is no clear overall progression due to repetitive mentions of the same categories and fragmented paragraph structure. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting a sentence with 'Whereas the textiles that had the lowest value among all grow significantly' and using disconnected single-sentence paragraphs. Reference words and logical links between sentences do not always make the relationship between the chart and the table clear. To improve, the student should group related data logically into coherent paragraphs and ensure that cohesive devices are used to link ideas smoothly rather than mechanically.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing several spelling errors such as 'Petroleulnm' and 'precentage', as well as word choice issues like 'lowest numbers' instead of 'lowest values'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'decline steadily' and 'grow significantly', but these are paired with inaccurate data readings. Communication is occasionally hindered by these lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their lexical range with accurate spelling, use precise terms for statistical trends, and avoid repeating the same vocabulary phrases throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns with frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'textile recorded' (singular/plural agreement) and 'grow significantly' instead of the past tense 'grew', mirroring the narrative timeline. Attempts at complex sentences often result in faulty structures, such as sentence fragments beginning with 'While the table compares...' which lacks a main clause. Frequent errors in prepositions and articles, including 'in the 2016', cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must focus on sentence completeness, correct past tense consistency for past data, and reducing basic grammatical errors.
