IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar grapgh illustrates the earning of one nation's export of different categories during 2015 and 2016 in billions of dollors. Also, the table describes the fluctuations and the comparison of values in percentages of each exported goods in both years.

Overall, the export of petroleum products was highest and almost same during both years, while the export of textiles was the lowest exported category in 2015 with significant hike in the following year.

To begin with the export of petroleum products, the chart shows it was just above the $60 billions in 2015, with just a minimal increase of 3% in the following year. The second most exported cotegory is engineered goods, which shows approximately $45 billions of earning in 2015 but there was substantial increase by 8.5% and it was almost same level of petroleum goods in 2016.

In contrast where all the categories shows growth in comparison, the export of gems and jewellery got decreased by 5.18% making it under $50 billions in 2016. Moreover, the figures for agricultural products remained almost unchanged at around $32 billions in both years, while the textiles shows drastic increase of export by 15.24% and move from $25 billions in 2015 to over $30 billions in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features from both the bar chart and the table. An overview is present, highlighting the highest and lowest categories and general trends. However, some parts are developed more fully than others, and there are a few inaccuracies in reading the data. For instance, the student states that engineered goods earned approximately $45 billion in 2015, whereas the chart shows the actual figure was around $57 billion. Additionally, the description of agricultural products mentions they remained around $32 billion, while the chart indicates $31 billion. These minor misreadings and slightly under-developed comparisons prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear structure that includes an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs. Information is generally presented in a logical sequence, moving from an overview to specific category details. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as "To begin with", "In contrast", and "Moreover". However, some cohesive referencing and transitions are a bit mechanical or slightly clumsy, such as "In contrast where all the categories shows growth in comparison". Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall the progression could be smoother to reach the next band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as "fluctuations", "significant hike", and "drastic increase". However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., "grapgh", "dollors", "cotegory") and minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as using "earning" instead of "earnings" and "got decreased" rather than "decreased". Despite these slips, meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded. To improve further, the writer needs to eliminate spelling mistakes and demonstrate more precise control over collocations and less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("the textiles shows"), missing articles ("was highest"), and awkward phrasing like "almost same level of petroleum goods". Punctuation is generally acceptable, and the structural errors are not frequent enough to impede communication. To reach a higher level, the writer should increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater accuracy in prepositions and articles.
