Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, as the reporting of data contains significant inaccuracies and is incomplete. For instance, the student states that petroleum products reached '65 and 67 billion dollar respectively' in 2015 and 2016, whereas the graph indicates approximately 61 and 63 billion dollars. Furthermore, the figures cited for engineered goods, gems and jewellery, and agriculture do not accurately reflect the visual data provided, and the response cuts off mid-sentence before covering all categories adequately. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure that the data selected from the visual is accurately reported and that all key features and comparisons are fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident with the use of introductory and body paragraphs, but the response lacks clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the abrupt ending shows a lack of control over the structure. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or inaccurate, such as relying heavily on basic transition phrases like 'Overall' and 'On the other hand' without effectively linking the comparative data. To improve, the writer needs to ensure ideas flow logically from one point to the next, using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers to connect sentences and paragraphs smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'dominated', 'percentage value', and 'incrideble', but these are marred by word choice inaccuracies and spelling errors (e.g., 'incrideble' instead of incredible, 'poduct' instead of product). Furthermore, terms like 'engine goods' show awkward word formation. The range of vocabulary is restricted, which occasionally causes confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise, task-specific vocabulary and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The bar graph illustrate') and missing articles or prepositions ('in between 2015 and 2016', 'in year 2015'). Additionally, punctuation is weak, and the incomplete final sentence leaves grammatical structures unresolved. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must work on basic grammatical accuracy, proper verb tenses for data reporting, and the correct formation of complex sentences.
