Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, coming in at 138 words with 18 words copied directly from the prompt. Furthermore, the task is addressed only partially. The student attempts to report data from the charts and table, but the information is heavily confused, inaccurate, and contradictory. For instance, the text claims that petroleum and engineering goods are the same values in both years, and that petroleum products decreased by 3 percent, whereas the provided visual data shows different values and an increase of 3 percent. The overview is extremely weak and fails to present a clear summary of the main trends. Ideas are limited, under-developed, and often misinterpret the source material, placing the response firmly at this band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response shows some basic organisation with paragraph breaks, but there is no clear overall progression. The relationship between sentences and ideas is frequently disjointed and confusing. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or used inappropriately, such as the awkward transition 'moreover' at the beginning, or 'however' and 'while, comparison with other products' which do not logically connect the ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal cohesion and clear thematic focus. The overall arrangement of information is difficult to follow, reflecting a basic level of coherence where referencing is frequently unclear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and basic, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as 'exports', 'categories', and 'market', but word choice and collocation are often inaccurate, such as 'product like petroleum', 'most improvement export markets felt', and 'economical export'. There are also lexical confusions like using 'dollars increased' instead of billions of dollars. Spelling is generally acceptable for common words, but the range of vocabulary is restricted and heavily reliant on repetitive phrasing from the prompt, preventing access to higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writing displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex or relative clauses that are heavily flawed. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, tenses, prepositions, and sentence boundaries. Examples include 'table decribes', 'textiles market increased by 8.5 percentage', 'agricultural products are significant lower', and '3% of decreased by the change in values'. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, with sentences starting with lowercase letters. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, characterising the grammatical control at this level.
