IELTS Writing Task 1 question
below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The below chart describes the worth of one country`s exports in different kinds during 2015 and 2016. The table illustrates the percentage modify in every type of exports in 2016 parallel with 2015. The units of measurement are in amount and also in percentages.
Overall, the above chart depicts that the petroleum products earned the most amount while the textiles gained least amount. In the below table the percentage of gems and jewellery decreased at the same time, the percentage of textiles increased in export from 2015to 2016.
The above chart demonstrates that the petroleum products earned 65 billion in 2015, and 68 billion in 2016. The engineers good achieved around 63 billion in 2015 and 67 billion in 2016. The gems and jewellery secured 52 billion in 2015, and 50 billion in 2016.The agricultural products acquired approximately 42 billion in 2015 and 40 billion in 2015. The textiles realized up to 34 billion in 2015, and 40 billion in 2016.
In contrast, the gems and jewellery dropped by 5.18% from 2015 to 2016, and another four categories increased such as petroleum products 3%, engineered goods 8.5%, agricultural products 0.81, and textiles 15.24% from 2015 to 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main categories and note that petroleum products are the largest export while textiles are the smallest, and you correctly report the percentage changes shown in the table, including the decline in gems and jewellery. However, several chart figures are substantially inaccurate: for example, petroleum is about $61 billion and $63 billion, not $65 billion and $68 billion, while gems and jewellery is about $43 billion and $41 billion, not $52 billion and $50 billion. Agricultural exports are roughly $31 billion in both years, rather than $42 billion and $40 billion. The overview also misses the key contrast that most categories rose, whereas agricultural products were almost unchanged. More accurate selection and reporting of the chart data, alongside the useful table summary, would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing chart values, and a final comparison of percentage changes. This helps the reader distinguish the chart from the table. However, progression is not always smooth. The final paragraph repeats information already given in the overview, and transitions such as “In contrast” do not clearly signal the relationship, since most categories increased. Some references, including “the above chart” and “the below table,” are repetitive and less precise. Grouping the main chart trends together and then summarising the table in a more clearly connected paragraph would improve the flow. Check that each sentence follows logically from the previous one and use linking expressions to show actual comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “decreased,” “increased,” and “acquired,” and the reader can generally understand which export categories you mean. However, several choices are unnatural or inaccurate for describing data: “percentage modify,” “earned the most amount,” and “the engineers good” weaken clarity. “Realized up to” is also not a natural way to report a figure. Some category names should be reproduced accurately, especially “engineered goods.” Aim for precise, conventional chart language rather than using a different synonym for each verb. Words such as “stood at,” “rose,” and “fell” are concise and appropriate for describing values and trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and most of the intended comparisons can be understood. However, control is uneven in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “In the below table the percentage of gems and jewellery decreased at the same time, the percentage of textiles increased” joins two complete ideas with a comma; use a full stop or a conjunction. In “The agricultural products acquired approximately 42 billion in 2015 and 40 billion in 2015,” the repeated year makes the comparison unclear. There are also missing spaces after full stops, as in “2016.The.” Use a consistent past-tense pattern when reporting the two years, and proofread sentence boundaries, dates, and punctuation. More accurate complex sentences would make the comparisons easier to follow.
