IELTS Writing Task 1 question
below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart compares the worth of exports made in different sectors by a country for year 2015 and 2016. While, the table potrays the percentage changes noticed in exports value for diiferent sectors in 2016, when comapred against the previous year 2015.
Overall, the exports values in 2016 can be seen to be higher than of 2015, in most of the sectors. While, the exports revenues can be observed to rise with large proportion in the textiles sector, followed by the engineered goods industry. However, the sector of gems and jewellery was the only industry with negative growth in exports value.
Firstly, the exports earnings for petroleum products rose slightly by 3% in single year. Moreover, the engineered goods exports revenue jumped significantly, and reached over figure of 70 billions dollars in one year, from that of around 65 billion dollars sales, resulting in percentage growth of 8.5% in exports earning.
On the other hand, gems and jewellery sector sales abroad fell by almost 3 billion dollars, and hence the industry realised the negative growth of 5.18% in a period of year. Furthermore, the export earnings from agricultural products rose slightly by almost 2 billion dollars, hence realising the slowest growth among all sectors of only 0.81%.
Lastly, the textiles earnings hiked up by almost 7 billion dollars in one year, and therefore, this industry got to observe the highest percentage growth rate of 15.24% in single year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address the task with a clear overview: textiles had the strongest growth, while gems and jewellery was the only category to decline. You also compare the categories and report most percentage changes accurately. However, there are important inaccuracies in the bar-chart figures: engineered goods rose from about $57 billion to $62 billion, not from around $65 billion to over $70 billion; agricultural exports were approximately $31 billion in both years, rather than rising by almost $2 billion; and textiles increased by about $5 billion, from $26 billion to $31 billion, not $7 billion. The overview is relevant and the main trends are selected, but checking the chart values more carefully and distinguishing approximate values from percentage changes would make the supporting details more reliable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs grouping increases and the decline. The progression from petroleum and engineered goods to the remaining categories is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Lastly” help signal shifts. However, some transitions feel mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely: “Firstly” is followed by two categories, while “On the other hand” introduces a decline and then another increase. The repeated use of “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “hence” also makes cohesion somewhat formulaic. At this level, the organisation is coherent, but more varied and precise links, alongside clearer grouping of the figures, would improve flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “exports earnings,” “percentage growth,” “negative growth,” and “highest percentage growth rate.” These choices make the comparisons understandable, and terms such as “rose slightly” and “fell” help describe trends. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, including “the worth of exports,” “reached over figure,” “sales abroad,” and “got to observe the highest percentage growth rate.” There are also spelling errors such as “potrays,” “diiferent,” and “comapred.” Some ambitious choices therefore lack precise collocation or control. Aim for standard chart language such as “export value,” “increased to,” and “recorded the highest growth,” and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “While” and “resulting in,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “the industry realised the negative growth … in a period of year.” However, there are recurring grammatical problems. “While, the table…” is an incomplete clause, and “higher than of 2015” has an incorrect comparison structure. Articles and number forms are also inconsistent in phrases such as “for year 2015,” “in single year,” and “over figure of 70 billions dollars.” The comma after “While” is also unnecessary in the opening. More accurate comparisons, articles, and sentence boundaries would strengthen control while retaining your range of structures.
