Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph compares the percentage of different export earnings of five different industrial categories happen in 2015 and 2016 in a particular country.
Overall, in 2016 most categories recorded a considerably higher figure than that in 2015. Particularly, petroleum products, engineering goods, agriculture products and textiles. Whereas, only one showed the decline in value.
In both years, petroleum products dominated the market with highest demand, and showed 3% of increase in 2016, as compared to 2015. Similarly, engineering goods were stayed the second most demanding items in both years, and in 2016 it aslo showed an increase of about 8.5% from 2015.
Agricultural products and textiles, made the lowest export both the years, and both showed an increase in 2016, however textiles demonstrated the highest profit of 15.24% as compared to others. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: four categories rose, while gems and jewellery fell, and you highlight textiles’ largest percentage increase. The comparisons of petroleum and engineering goods as the two leading categories are also supported by the chart. This gives the response a clear overview and addresses the task. However, some details are imprecise: agricultural products and textiles were not both the lowest in both years, since gems and jewellery was lower than either in 2015 and 2016. Also, the chart shows agricultural exports at roughly the same value in both years, despite the table’s small positive change. To strengthen the report, distinguish the categories’ actual export values from their percentage changes and include a few approximate figures to support the comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a broad overview, and two paragraphs grouping the leading categories and the remaining categories. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “In contrast” help show relationships between points. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Particularly, petroleum products, engineering goods, agriculture products and textiles” is a sentence fragment rather than a complete continuation of the overview, and “Agricultural products and textiles, made the lowest export both the years” combines two categories without clearly distinguishing their positions. Use complete sentences and organise comparisons more precisely—for instance, group the two highest-value categories together, then compare the other three. This would make cohesion more flexible and the paragraphing more purposeful.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “export,” “decline,” “increase,” and “dominated,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, the range and control are limited by repeated or imprecise expressions. “Highest demand” and “most demanding items” describe consumer demand rather than export earnings, while “highest profit” does not accurately describe the largest percentage rise. There are also noticeable word-form and spelling problems, including “decreament” and “aslo,” as well as awkward phrases such as “made the lowest export.” Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, such as “recorded the highest export value,” “rose by,” and “the smallest export category.” This would improve clarity and demonstrate more flexible vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons and contrast clauses, and the main message remains understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in verb forms, sentence completeness, articles, and punctuation. For example, “categories happen in 2015 and 2016” uses an unsuitable verb form, and “engineering goods were stayed” incorrectly combines two verb forms. “Particularly, petroleum products…” is a fragment, while “in 2016 it aslo showed” lacks a clear grammatical link between the clauses. There are also problems with articles and prepositions in phrases such as “with highest demand” and “declined 5.18% from 2015.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete sentence structures, while retaining the comparisons you attempt.
