IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The provided bar chart compares the earnings of the year 2015 and 2016 while, the table indicates the percentage difference in value in the same year.

As can be seen from the bar chart, the contribution of peteroleum products in export earnings topped among all in both years by 60 and 62 billion dollars. The engineered goods were at 58 billion dollars in year 2015 and it rose by almost 5%. The earnings from gems and jewellery were at 52 and 50% respectively. The earning from agricultural products was 40 billion dollars in both years. The earnings from textiles were least in both years.

According to the percentage change, the export of petroleum products and engineering goods increased by 3% and 8.5% while, the gems and jewellery declined by 5.18%. Textile industry faced significant growth of 15.24%

To conclude, the export earnings of petroleum product were highest among with 3% change in value. Therefore, the earnings from gems and jewellery decreased by 5.18% in the year 2015 and 2015

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the main categories and note that petroleum products earned the most, while textiles were the smallest category. However, several reported figures conflict substantially with the chart: gems and jewellery are about $43 billion in 2015 and $41 billion in 2016, not “52 and 50%”; agricultural products are about $31 billion in both years, not $40 billion. You also say engineered goods rose by almost 5%, whereas the table gives 8.5%. The overview is limited, and the conclusion repeats points rather than summarising the overall pattern; it also incorrectly dates the decline as occurring from 2015 to 2015. To improve, accurately compare the main rises and fall, and give a concise overview grounded in the data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph describing chart values, a paragraph on percentage changes, and a concluding sentence. This helps the reader follow the broad topic. However, progression is uneven because the conclusion repeats earlier details instead of drawing the main comparisons together, and some links are awkward or inaccurate, such as “while, the gems and jewellery declined.” The opening also combines the chart and table without clearly setting out the overall trend. Grouping the categories by direction of change, then using the table to support those comparisons, would create a clearer progression. Check punctuation around linking words and avoid unnecessary transitions such as “To conclude” when the final sentence adds no new overview.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “percentage change,” “increased,” and “declined,” and you attempt to vary references to the data with “contribution” and “growth.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “earnings of the year” is unclear, “the contribution of … in export earnings” is unnatural, and “faced significant growth” is not the most suitable description for a category’s export value. There are also spelling errors in “peteroleum” and inconsistent forms such as “engineering goods” for “engineered goods.” Use precise chart language and check category names carefully; this will make comparisons easier to understand and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more developed sentences, for example, “As can be seen from the bar chart…” and the sentence comparing several percentage changes. However, grammatical errors occur often enough to make some statements unclear. The opening has faulty punctuation and structure (“compares the earnings of the year 2015 and 2016 while, the table…”), and “The earnings from gems and jewellery were at 52 and 50% respectively” has an unclear, mismatched comparison. There are also problems with articles and number agreement in “the export of petroleum products and engineering goods increased,” followed by inconsistent singular/plural references. The final phrase “in the year 2015 and 2015” is also incorrect. Practise accurate comparison structures and proofread sentence boundaries, articles, and verb forms.
