IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates export earnings of one particular country in five distinct product categories, between 2015 and 2016, while the table compares the overall percentage change in the exports of each category over a period of two years.

Overall, the exports of all products increased except gems and jewellery. Petroleum products reprsented the largest figures, whereas textiles accounted for the smallest share in 2015. Although textiles showed the least amount of expots in 2015, it witnessed the largest percentage increase, with the agricultural products depicted the lowest increase.

In 2016, the petroleum products earned alomst 60 billion dollars and reached to about 63 billion dollars in the next year. The earnings raised from around 55 to just over 60 billion dollars for engineering products. The exports for textiles went up substantialy, from 35 to apprximately 41 billion dolaars. However, the expots of gems and jewellery dropped minimally, whereas the exports remained relatively same for agricultural products.

Regarding the percentage change, textiles rose considerably, at 15.24%. This is followed by engineering goods and petroleum products, at 8.5% and 3%, respectively. Agricultural products went up by just 0.81% and gems and jewellery declind by 5.18%/

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern that most categories rose while gems and jewellery declined, and you highlight textiles’ strong percentage growth and agriculture’s minimal change. The response also includes relevant comparisons between categories. However, several figures and descriptions do not match the chart: petroleum earnings were about $61 billion in 2015 and $63 billion in 2016, not “almost 60” followed by 63; engineered goods rose from about $57 billion to $62 billion; and textiles increased from about $26 billion to $31 billion, not from 35 to 41. The overview also calls textiles the smallest category only in 2015, without clearly noting that it remained the smallest in 2016. More accurate reporting of the bar values would make the summary more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing the chart, and a final paragraph on percentage changes. This makes the information easy to follow, and transitions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Regarding the percentage change” help signal shifts. The comparison of the percentage changes is also logically ordered from the largest increase downwards. To make the progression more consistently clear, group related chart details and ensure each sentence reports a complete, unambiguous comparison. For example, “In 2016” introduces figures for both years, while “reached to about 63 billion dollars in the next year” makes the time reference less direct. Some linking is effective, but the connections between the chart values and the table could be smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “percentage change,” “accounted for,” “dropped,” and “remained relatively same.” These choices generally communicate the intended trends, and terms such as “considerably” and “minimally” help distinguish the scale of change. However, several spelling errors are noticeable, including “reprsented,” “expots,” “alomst,” “substantialy,” and “declind.” Some word combinations are also imprecise: “the exports of all products increased” conflicts with the decline in gems, and “the earnings raised” is less natural than a standard trend expression. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise collocations so the vocabulary supports clear, reliable data reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “Although textiles showed the least amount …, it witnessed the largest percentage increase” and contrast introduced by “whereas.” Most sentences remain understandable, so grammatical errors do not generally obscure the message. Some sentence patterns are inaccurate or awkward, however. In “reached to about 63 billion dollars,” the verb pattern is incorrect; “reached about 63 billion dollars” is the appropriate construction. “With the agricultural products depicted the lowest increase” also does not fit grammatically after the preceding clause, and “the exports remained relatively same” is missing an article. Review verb patterns, clause connections, and articles, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
