IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The following table represents the export's data in various categories such as "petroleum products, Engineered goods , Gems and jewellery, adricultural products and textiles " , The graph mainly shows the percentage which changes in different categories , the dark brown colour shows 2015 earnings interms of export and the light brown colour shows 2016 earnings interms of export , as we can see in the following graph the petrolium products are more likely increased in their percentage from 2015 to 2016 , but unlikely the engineered goods are more likely to be downgraded in percentage in 2015 as compared to 2016. Gems and jewellery have more percentage in export earnings in 2015 as compared to 2016 , The agriculture products have almost the same rate of percentage in both the years but 2016 has slightly bit more percentage then the previous year, whereas if we talk about the Textiles so the percentage in 2016 is increased when compared with 2015 export earnings

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the categories and report several broad directions correctly: petroleum, engineered goods and textiles rise, while gems and jewellery fall, and agricultural exports are nearly unchanged. However, the response does not clearly summarise the main features of the data, and it gives no actual export values or percentage figures. The overview is also weakened by a contradiction: engineered goods are described as being “downgraded in percentage in 2015 as compared to 2016,” although the intended comparison is unclear, and the chart shows an increase from 2015 to 2016. The claim that agriculture is slightly higher in 2016 is not supported by the approximate bar values, which are about the same. Select the largest and smallest values and the most notable changes, then report them accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response follows a broadly relevant sequence, moving through the export categories, and linking words such as “but,” “whereas” and “as compared to” show an attempt to connect comparisons. However, nearly all the information is packed into one long paragraph and one extended sentence, so the reader has difficulty distinguishing an introduction, an overview and supporting details. Several transitions are awkward or unclear, particularly “but unlikely the engineered goods,” and repeated references to “percentage” do not create a clear progression. Organise the answer into short paragraphs: introduce the chart, give an overview of the main trends, and then compare the categories with figures. Use linking expressions only where they clarify the relationship between facts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “categories,” “increased” and “compared,” so the general subject is understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “downgraded in percentage,” “more likely increased” and “slightly bit more percentage.” Spelling errors, including “petrolium” and “adricultural,” also reduce precision, while repeated use of “percentage” obscures the distinction between export values and percentage change. Aim for standard chart language and accurate category names, such as “rose,” “fell,” “remained stable,” “value” and “share,” using “export earnings” consistently for the figures shown in billions of dollars.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine comparisons in longer sentences, using clauses introduced by “but,” “whereas” and “as compared to.” However, the response relies heavily on a single run-on sentence, and punctuation does not reliably separate complete ideas. There are also recurring problems with sentence construction and grammatical patterns, for example “the petrolium products are more likely increased” and “the percentage in 2016 is increased.” These forms make some comparisons difficult to follow. Use a wider mix of controlled simple and complex sentences, with clear subjects and verbs—for example, “Petroleum exports rose from about $61 billion to $63 billion.” Check articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries when editing.
