Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the value of a single country's exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table demonstrates the proportion change in each category of exports between during the two years.

Overall, most of the exports increased during the next year (Petroleum products, engineering goods, agricultural products and textiles). In contrast, the export of Gems and Jewelries declined.

In 2015, the export of petroleum products accounted for the country's largest revenue at around 70 billions. The revenue slightly increased by 3% in 2016 reaching approximately 75 billions. Engineering products also reported a similar pattern, it started at about 65 billions and ended at around 74 billions at 8.5% increment slightly closer to matching the revenue generated by petroleum products in 2016.

A similar trend is shown from the export of agricultural products and textiles during the years. Agricultural products reported a 0.81% increase to around 42 billion in 2016 from its previous value of approximately 40 billion in 2015. Textile accounted for the highest proportion amonthe other five products at 15.24% in 2016 with a value of around 42 billion from it's previous value of matching the re

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart and table and give a relevant overview: most categories rise, while gems and jewellery falls. However, the overview and details do not accurately represent several key figures. Petroleum is about $61 billion in 2015 and $63 billion in 2016, not around $70 billion and $75 billion; engineered goods are about $57 billion and $62 billion, not $65 billion and $74 billion. Agricultural exports are roughly $31 billion in both years, rather than $40 billion rising to $42 billion. The final discussion of textiles is cut off, and gems receive no supporting figures. The response therefore addresses the task only partially, with important data misreported or omitted. Focus on accurate comparisons and complete the account of all major categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to category details. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “A similar trend” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression becomes difficult to follow in the detail paragraphs: petroleum and engineering are grouped together, while the final paragraph shifts between agriculture and textiles and ends mid-sentence. The phrase “a similar pattern” is also unclear because the two categories do not show the same degree of change. Organise the details into clearer comparisons, and ensure each paragraph develops a complete point. More precise referencing and transitions would make the sequence easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “revenue,” “declined,” and “increment,” and the main topic remains understandable. However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing the data: “proportion change” should refer to a percentage change, and “engineering products” is less precise than the chart’s “engineered goods.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “Jewelries,” “amonthe,” and “it's” where the possessive “its” is needed. Repetition of “around,” “value,” and “products” limits variety. Aim for accurate chart terminology and natural collocations, such as “export earnings rose to” or “recorded a slight decline.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the overview contrast and the sentence describing engineering exports. However, complex constructions are often faulty or incomplete, and errors sometimes make relationships between figures unclear. For example, “The table demonstrates the proportion change … between during the two years” contains an incorrect preposition pattern, while “Engineering products also reported a similar pattern, it started…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. The final sentence is unfinished, and “from it's previous value” has an incorrect possessive form. Use shorter, complete sentences when comparing figures, check clause boundaries and prepositions, and proofread for agreement and punctuation.
