Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response makes a relevant attempt to describe the chart and includes an overview, but it does not accurately identify the main features. Textiles did not have the highest export value: petroleum products were highest in both years, while textiles and agricultural products were among the lowest. The statement that petroleum products represented “3% of values” also confuses the table’s 3% change with the chart’s dollar values. The response ends mid-sentence, so most categories and comparisons are not reported. It is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving the task only minimally addressed. To improve, give a complete overview and compare the actual figures and changes across the categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence is followed by an overview and then a detail paragraph. This gives the reader a recognisable starting structure. However, the response stops after “whereas,” so there is no completed comparison or progression through the data. The transition “In details” signals a move to specifics, but the paragraph does not develop. Punctuation spacing is also inconsistent, as in “Overall,it” and “values, while.” To make the organisation more effective, complete each paragraph, group related categories, and use clear links such as “by contrast” or “meanwhile” to show comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “product categories,” “highest,” and “lowest,” so its basic meaning is generally apparent. However, the range is very limited, and several word choices or spellings reduce precision: “campares” and “proporation” are misspelled, “agricultures products” is not the correct category name, and “share of values” is unclear for figures given in billions of dollars. The phrase “represents 3% of values” also uses the percentage-change figure as though it were a share. Use accurate chart language such as “export earnings,” “rose by,” and “stood at,” and check spelling and category labels carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few sentence patterns, including a contrast with “whereas” and an overview beginning “Overall, it is clear that…”. These show some control of basic sentence construction. However, the final sentence is incomplete, ending with “whereas,” and the verb form in “petroleum products represents” does not agree with the plural subject. The comma spacing in “Overall,it” and “values, while” also weakens punctuation control. Most of the response relies on short, simple structures, so it does not demonstrate a broad range. Practise completing comparison clauses, checking subject–verb agreement, and combining accurate simple and complex sentences.
