IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the exports of a paricular country based on different categories, while the table depicts information about the percentage changes in 2015 and 2016.

Overall, petroleum products and engineered goods produced the largest earnings in both the years, All the categories experienced a slight increase in earnings except gems and jewellery, which underwent a minor decline in earnings by 2016.

Regarding the export earnings, in 2015 and 2016, petroleum products and engineered goods experienced a similar upward trend, with farmer's earnings rising from $60 to approximately $74 billion and later from around $56 to over $61 billion. Similary, agricultural products saw a marginal rise from $31 to around $32 billion, while textiles recorded $26 billion earnings in 2015, which surged to $32 billion by 2016.

According to the table, petroleum products and engineered goods rose by 3% and 8.5% respectively. Coversely, gems and jewellery decreased by 5.18%. Agricultural products saw an insignificant change, rising by only 0.81%. Finally, the change in textiles was dramatical, increasing by 15.24%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You provide an overview that identifies the leading export categories and the decline in gems and jewellery, and you report all five percentage changes from the table. However, the chart figures are not consistently accurate: petroleum earnings are given as rising from $60 billion to about $74 billion, whereas the chart shows approximately $61 billion and $63 billion. The engineered-goods figures are also misreported, and the overview says all other categories increased even though agricultural earnings are essentially unchanged at about $31 billion. The response therefore covers the main task but some key comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. Check each bar against the chart and distinguish a small increase from no meaningful change to make the summary more reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, chart details and table details. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Regarding” and “According to the table” help signal the sections. Some connections are less effective, however. The chart paragraph groups petroleum and engineered goods together but gives confusing figures, then moves to agriculture and textiles without a clear comparison of the categories. The overview also conflicts with the later description of agricultural earnings. Use a more consistent order and make sure the overview matches the details; clearer links between each category’s values and its percentage change would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “marginal rise,” “decline” and “percentage changes.” These choices help communicate the main trends, and “surged” and “insignificant change” show attempts to vary your wording. Some expressions are inaccurate or imprecise: “farmer’s earnings” does not refer clearly to petroleum exports, while “experienced a similar upward trend” is not suitable for the figures as reported. There are also spelling errors in “paricular,” “Similary,” “Coversely” and “dramatical,” which reduce accuracy. Choose precise category names and standard trend language, and proofread spelling and word forms to make the description more natural and dependable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “gems and jewellery, which underwent a minor decline” and a comparison structure in “while textiles recorded…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation slips are present. In the overview, a comma separates two independent clauses after “both the years,” and “All” is incorrectly capitalised after that comma; use a full stop or semicolon. The phrase “in 2015 and 2016” is awkwardly placed in the chart paragraph, and the long sentence beginning “Regarding the export earnings” becomes difficult to follow because its figures and categories are not clearly matched. Aim for cleaner sentence boundaries and parallel phrasing when comparing the two years.
