IELTS Writing Task 1 question
below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The chart illustrates, the amount of money gained by a country from exportation of goods in multiple categories in the years of 2015 and 2016. Overall, earnings showed a tendency to rise in this one year period.
Earnings from the products made with petrol based substances raised by 10 billion dollars. This rise was probably linked with the %3 increase of its value. Similar trend is also observable in the category of engineered goods which became %8.5 more valuable. This product category generated approximately 5 billion more dollars compared to the 2015 sales. These two categories were the ones which generated most amount of money in both of the years.
Gems and jewellry´s product value dropped by 5.18% in one year. That resulted in a minor decrease in its sales and it is the only product that was less profitable in compared to the 2015 sales.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the chart’s general subject and notes that petroleum and engineered goods were the largest export categories, while gems and jewellery declined. However, it covers only three of the five categories: agricultural products and textiles are omitted, so the main features are not adequately summarised. The overview that earnings generally rose is also inaccurate, since gems fell and agricultural exports were essentially unchanged; textiles, the category with the largest percentage increase, is not discussed. In addition, the stated $10 billion rise for petroleum products conflicts with the chart’s approximate values of $61 billion and $63 billion. The response is also four words below the required minimum. Include all key categories, report the principal comparisons accurately, and avoid unsupported explanations such as linking earnings changes to value changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs on the leading categories and on gems and jewellery. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Similar trend,” and “That resulted” help show relationships between points. However, the progression is incomplete because agricultural products and textiles are left out, and the final paragraph ends without a concluding comparison or a complete account of the data. Some connections are also unclear: “This rise” refers to a petroleum increase that is reported inaccurately, while “That resulted” asserts a causal link rather than simply describing the chart. Organise the body around the main increases and the contrasting decline or stability, and use references that clearly match the figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “exportation,” “generated,” “category,” “value,” and “profitable,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are, however, noticeable problems with word choice, spelling, and collocation that limit precision. “Products made with petrol based substances” is an awkward description of petroleum products, and “most amount of money” is not idiomatic. “Jewellry´s” contains a spelling error and an incorrect possessive form, while “sales” is less precise than export earnings in this context. Aim for concise, standard chart language and accurate category names; for example, use “petroleum products,” “export revenue,” and “the highest earnings.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple and more developed sentence forms, such as “This product category generated approximately 5 billion more dollars compared to the 2015 sales” and “That resulted in a minor decrease in its sales.” Most sentences remain understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. The opening comma after “illustrates” is unnecessary, and “in compared to” is an incorrect prepositional construction. The phrase “in the years of 2015 and 2016” is also awkwardly formed, and the percentage notation is placed as “%3” and “%8.5” rather than following standard English usage. Use straightforward comparative structures, such as “compared with 2015,” and check punctuation and percentage formatting while retaining some complex sentence patterns.
