IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart indicates the values of differents products such as petroleum, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural and textile, which were exported by one country during 2015 and 2016. Overall, we can clearly see that the earnings increased on every product category expect jewellery and gems in 2016.

To begin with, export earnings were slightly more in 2016 on petroleum and agricultural products compared to 2015. Furthermore, the increase in earnings on engineered goods and textiles are the highest among all the products. However, gems and jewellery products breaks the trend by exporting less in 2016 from 2015.

This chart also shows that the most exported products were petroleum and engineered goods and the earnings were more than 65 billion dollars in both year. Gems and jewellery earnings were around 50 billion dollars. Lastly, agricultural products followed with the earnings around 40 billion dollars and the textile products made a jump from around 35 billion to more than 40 billion dollars.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: most categories rose, while gems and jewellery declined, and you note that petroleum and engineered goods were the leading exports. These are relevant features and give the response a clear overview. However, several figures and comparisons are inaccurate: petroleum and engineered goods were about $61–63 billion, not more than $65 billion; gems and jewellery were around $41–43 billion, not $50 billion; and agricultural exports were about $31 billion, not $40 billion. The claim that agricultural earnings increased is also not supported by the chart, which shows roughly the same value in both years. Develop the overview with accurate figures and distinguish the largest percentage rise, textiles, from the largest export values.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs, with a generally clear progression from broad trends to category details. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “However” help guide the reader, and the contrast with gems and jewellery is easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some stronger control through purposeful paragraphing. To make the progression more precise, group the categories by trend or compare their values systematically rather than moving between general claims and a final ranking. “Furthermore” introduces a point that is not clearly connected to the preceding comparison, and “This chart also shows” repeats the chart reference. More precise links between each claim and its supporting figures would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “product category,” “increase,” and “trend,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “breaks the trend” and “made a jump.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “values of differents products” is awkward, “exporting less” does not naturally describe lower earnings, and “the most exported products” is less exact than describing the categories with the highest export values. “Agricultural and textile” also needs more accurate category naming. Aim for concise chart language such as “export value,” “rose,” “fell,” and “remained stable,” and use the same category labels consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “products … which were exported” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “the increase in earnings … are the highest,” the subject and verb do not agree; use “the increases … are” or “the increase … is.” “Gems and jewellery products breaks” also has a plural subject with a singular verb, and “in both year” needs a plural noun. The opening phrase “values of differents products” contains an incorrect plural form. Check agreement, plurals, and sentence-level phrasing carefully, while continuing to use varied structures.
