IELTS Writing Task 1 question

below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The data illustrates value of single country's exports in different categories between 2015 and 2016.

Overall, the value of goods increased other than gems and jewellery. Petroleum related produts accumulated the most money while textile and agriculture earned the least.

Gasoline products increased by 3 percent from 2015 to 2016 to reaching almost 70 billion dollars. Engineering related products saw a big positive trend with 8.5 percent increase from the previous year. Precious items such as jewellery was the only product that declined from the previous year losing 5.18 percent overall value and decreased to approximately 50 billion dollars in 2016.

Agriculture had the least upgrade with 0.81 percent from 2015 while textile had the biggest change of all with 15.24 percent increase. Both Clothing and farming products made the least amount of money not exceeding 50 billion dollars in any year. Textile accounted to even less than 40 billion dollars in 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the overall rise in most categories and the fall in gems and jewellery, and you note that petroleum exports were highest. You also include several percentage changes, including the largest increase for textiles. However, some key figures are misread: petroleum reached about $63 billion, not almost $70 billion, and gems and jewellery fell to about $41 billion, not $50 billion. The overview also says textiles and agriculture earned the least, although textiles rose to roughly $31 billion in 2016, matching agriculture. The response addresses the main features, but these inaccuracies and the limited comparison of the two years leave some information unclear. Report the chart values more precisely and distinguish the categories’ rankings.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing individual categories. The progression from the general trend to specific changes is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “while,” and “Both” help connect ideas. However, the final paragraph groups agriculture and textiles as making the least money without clearly explaining their different values, and “Both Clothing and farming products” is not clearly linked to the chart’s category names. Some information is repeated, such as the textile increase and its low earnings, while comparisons across categories could be organised more systematically. Grouping the highest-value categories together and the lower-value categories together would make the progression more controlled and the comparisons clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “increased,” “declined,” “positive trend,” and “percentage increase.” Some attempts at more varied wording are useful, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this chart. “Gasoline products” does not match the category “petroleum products,” and “accumulated the most money” is less suitable than a phrase such as “generated the highest export earnings.” “Least upgrade” is also an awkward way to describe a small increase, while “textile” and “clothing” are not interchangeable with the chart label “textiles.” There are also spelling errors, including “produts.” Use the chart’s exact category names and choose precise collocations for export values and changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. The opening sentence and the overview communicate the main subject and trend effectively. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “increased by 3 percent … to reaching,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use “increased by 3 percent to reach.” The sentence “Precious items such as jewellery was the only product” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “with 8.5 percent increase” needs an article (“an 8.5 percent increase”). There are also article and phrasing issues in “value of single country's exports.” Review verb patterns after “to,” agreement with singular and plural subjects, and article use. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
