Student answer (Band 5.5)

Over the past 50 years, the role of women in society has changed considerably. While some people believe that this development has brought positive changes, others disagree. I strongly believe that this trend has had a beneficial impact on society, despite the fact that gender equality has not yet been fully achieved.

Analysing the statement and explaining further, the first and foremost reason behind this is that women play an important role in the betterment of the whole society. In the past, everyone treated them as as insignificant members of society. They did all the household chores, take care of children and their husbands. Although they were more educated than the men, they still were not allowed to pursue employment. The whole society wanted to cage them in their homes and to take all kinds of work from them and in return not give them even a little respect.

This trend changed significantly in the past 50 years, as women started fighting for their own rights. The whole women societies became united and changed and transformed their circumstances. Also, the socities have started appreciating the efforts of women in the past and through that their position was slowly changing and now they are more confident and more powerful than any other gender of a certain society.

Apart from the reasons mentioned above, it can be clearly stated why many are against this trend as they cannot accept the success of women those are once lacking confidence and shy and cannot express what they were feeling and how to overcome this.

In conclusion, although some people still oppose the changing role of women due to traditional beliefs, I strongly believe that this development has brought significant benefits by promoting gender equality, independence and greater opportunities in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion: you believe women’s changing role has benefited society, while equality remains incomplete. However, the response does not consistently answer the precise question of whether societies have achieved gender equality. Most of the body describes women’s past treatment and increased confidence, rather than explaining what inequalities persist today or how far equality has been reached. The paragraph beginning “Apart from the reasons mentioned above” attempts to present opposition, but its point is difficult to follow and is not supported with a clear example. To strengthen the response, state your degree of agreement directly and develop two relevant arguments, such as continuing pay gaps or unequal representation, with specific examples and explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable essay structure, with an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the final paragraph returns to your overall view. However, the progression between ideas is not consistently clear. The second paragraph begins “Analysing the statement and explaining further,” but then shifts from women’s historical roles to a broad claim about their contribution without a clear line of reasoning. The paragraph about people opposing change is especially hard to connect to the question, and “Apart from the reasons mentioned above” does not clearly signal the relationship between the points. Use topic sentences that directly address equality, then organise each paragraph around one claim and its explanation or example. Clearer links between past change and present-day inequality would improve the overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary to discuss social change, including “beneficial impact,” “traditional beliefs,” “independence” and “greater opportunities.” These choices help communicate your general position. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, which limits clarity: “the betterment of the whole society,” “the whole women societies,” and “take all kinds of work from them” do not express your intended ideas naturally. There is also a spelling error in “socities.” Aim for more precise language about equality and social conditions, and check collocations and spelling during revision. For example, describe women as contributing to society, refer to women’s organisations, and explain that they were expected to perform unpaid domestic work.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a concession in “although some people still oppose the changing role of women” and a subordinate clause beginning “as women started fighting for their own rights.” However, errors in verb forms and sentence construction are noticeable. In “They did all the household chores, take care of children,” the verbs are not parallel; use “did … and took care of …”. “Everyone treated them as as insignificant members” repeats the preposition, while “women those are once lacking confidence” has an incorrect relative structure and tense. Some sentences also become difficult to follow because several ideas are joined without clear grammatical relationships. Practise accurate parallel structures and relative clauses, and proofread each sentence for tense consistency and missing or repeated words.
